A 64-year-old Lewistown man who tried to kill his adult son has been ordered to serve 50 years at Montana State Prison.
Fergus County District Court Judge E. Wayne Phillips imposed the prison sentence against Benny Nelson Jones for the attempted murder in April of his son, Nathan Jones.
The judge also ordered Jones to serve a concurrent prison term of 15 years for assault with a weapon. Jones was sentenced Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to the charges.
Jones was charged for an incident April 8 outside the 4-Acres Casino and Restaurant. Jones and his son had been arguing when Jones started shooting at his son with a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
Nathan Jones was not injured, but one bullet left a hole in the jacket he was wearing, according to court records. He told police that he and his father did not get along, and just before the shooting his father threatened to kill him.
A woman sitting in a parked vehicle was nearly hit when one bullet struck the vehicle and shattered a window.
