HELENA - A 31-year-old man accused of passing a Helena bank teller a note demanding money and saying he had a gun has been arrested.
Police Chief Troy McGee said Stephen Safronoff of Helena tried to rob a Wells Fargo branch on Fuller Avenue at about 12:15 p.m Tuesday but ran out of the bank without any cash. Safronoff was arrested without incident on a felony charge of attempted robbery. The teller said the suspect did not brandish a weapon during the incident.
McGee said descriptions and photos of Safronoff taken from bank security were distributed around the community, including at the Center for Mental Health, where workers recognized the suspect as a client. Safronoff was arrested at the facility at about 2 p.m.
