A Hill County man died after leading officers on a high-speed chase Tuesday evening near Chinook that ended when he crashed a stolen pickup on a gravel road, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

The chase began when a Blaine County Sheriff's deputy tried to pull over a Dodge pickup that had been reported stolen earlier in the day, MHP Trooper Matt Erickson said Wednesday.

Officers followed the pickup down Elloam Road, a secondary highway that runs north of the Hi-Line town, Erickson said.

After leading officers about four miles up the road, the pickup lost control when the road changed from pavement to gravel, rolling several times and ejecting the single occupant, Erickson said.

The crash was reported at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The man, who Erickson said was in his mid-20s, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Havre, and was then taken by air ambulance to Great Falls, where he died.
