BOZEMAN - A Bozeman skier and a group of snowmobilers from North Dakota were caught in three separate avalanches in Gallatin County on Saturday, but only one man was injured.
The first avalanche was triggered by a group of eight snowmobilers in McAtee Basin just south of Big Sky Resort. A 39-year-old man was injured in the slide. Details about his condition were not available.
The other two avalanches, on the west side of the Bridger Mountains, were triggered by a lone skier who had dropped down from the Bridger Bowl ski area. The 24-year-old Bozeman man was not injured.
"We've got very sensitive snow right now," Gallatin County Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Jarrett said. "These are exceptional avalanche conditions and the issue becomes, is the fun worth it?"
Jarrett said the 150-square-yard Big Sky slide was triggered around 2:30 p.m. when the snowmobilers were traversing the bottom of a mountain.
