HELENA - A 20-year-old Helena man who set a 44-acre blaze on the west edge of the city in September 2007 has been ordered to pay $763,000 in restitution.
Chad H. Truscott received a two-year deferred sentence for misdemeanor negligent arson for the fire, started by homemade fireworks. The fire destroyed two vacant houses, led to the evacuation of about 500 residences and charred most of the vegetation around Spring Meadow Lake.
District Judge Dorothy McCarter ordered Truscott to pay the restitution for damages caused by the fire and to cover firefighting efforts. She ordered Truscott, who is attending college, to work full time during the summer to make the payments.
