A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Glendive resident Shawn Michael Wentz to more than six years in prison for possessing child pornography on his computer.

U.S. District Judge Susan Watters of Billings also ordered Wentz, 28, to spend 10 years on supervised release and to register as a sex offender when released from prison. Watters followed sentencing recommendations from both the prosecution and defense attorneys in imposing six years and six months of custody, which was near the low end of the guideline range.

Wentz apologized and said he now realizes the seriousness of his actions and looked forward to getting treatment.

Wentz pleaded guilty in October to possession of child porn in a plea deal. Watters dismissed other counts.

Prosecutors said Wentz came to the attention of agents with the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in May 2015. Agents learned that a computer at Wentz’s residence had child porn files available for downloading.

Agents served a search warrant at Wentz’s residence in June 2016 and seized a desktop computer. An analysis found it contained more than 600 images of child porn, including images of prepubescent children.
