GREAT FALLS - A 39-year-old Great Falls man who was involved in a standoff with police in May that ended with him setting a house on fire has been given two five-year suspended sentences.

James B. Messick was also ordered to pay $380,000 to his insurance provider for destroying the house. Court records say he was distraught about a divorce at the time.

Deputy Cascade County Attorney Steve Bolstad and Messick's attorneys reached a plea agreement that called for Messick to be given two six-year deferred sentences on charges of arson and felony criminal endangerment.

District Judge Dirk Sandefur opted for the suspended sentences, which Bolstad said places more restrictions on Messick.
