BUTTE - Southwestern Montana builders are upset that leaders in Butte awarded a more-than $4 million building contract to an Idaho company after hoping to secure the work for local contractors.
Butte leaders voted 11-1 to award the contract to Pacific West Construction of Idaho Falls, after the company submitted the lowest bid of $4.26 million
Commissioner Mike Sheehy, a longtime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, was the only "no" vote and said he opposed awarding it to Pacific West because it would potentially displace local workers.
Sheehy said that in his mind, "it just hurts the workforce of Butte."
But the Montana Standard reports that because the commissioners are using federal help to build the affordable senior housing facility, they had to go with the lowest qualifying bid.
