The December issue of Outside magazine features Greg Mortenson, a co-founder of the Bozeman-based Central Asia Institute.
The article, which will be on newsstands Nov. 11, follows Mortenson on a chaotic trip through remote, mountainous areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan where the Central Asia Institute has built schools.
The institute fosters community-based education, especially for girls, in an attempt to alleviate poverty and fight Islamic extremism. The institute supports, either fully or partially, 78 schools, 14 women's vocational centers and other public-works projects.
Mortenson and co-author David Oliver Relin wrote the best-seller "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace … One School At A Time," about Mortenson's experiences founding and running the organization.
The magazine article was written by Kevin Fedarko, who wrote a cover story in Parade Magazine about Mortenson in 2003.
