BOZEMAN — Authorities have released the name of the man who was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop here Friday night.
He was Gary Gottfried, 48, of Manhattan.
Lt. Rich McLane, a 14-year veteran of the department, pulled him over for speeding, Bozeman Police Chief Mark Tymrak said Saturday.
McLane got out of his squad car and approached the driver's side window of Gottfried's pickup. Gottfried then pointed a handgun at McLane and pulled the trigger, Tymrak said.
McLane's wife, Rhonda, was in the patrol car at the time for an authorized ride-along, Tymrak said. Neither was injured.
McLane was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
