MISSOULA — Lake County authorities have released the names of the two men involved in a deadly stabbing in Polson early Saturday morning.

The 26-year-old male victim was Polson resident John Pierre. The suspect is 32-year-old Makueeyapeh Whitford, who is a resident of Browning and remains in the Lake County Detention Facility on charges of deliberate homicide.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. Saturday in a home in the 1600 block of First Street East in Polson, according to Karen Sargeant, spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Pierre was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A police officer located Whitford at a local motel within an hour of the emergency call to dispatchers.

While motive was unknown, alcohol was involved, Sargeant said.

The incident remains under investigation.
