BUTTE — National handball champion Bill Peoples, 60, of Butte, died Friday in Missoula.

He was run over by a delivery truck on the University of Montana campus, apparently in an attempt to commit suicide, the Missoulian reported. A witness told police Peoples waited for the truck’s cab to pass and jumped under the trailer.

Investigators say he sustained chest injuries after being crushed by the back tires. An investigation is not yet complete.

Peoples, a Butte native, was named the University of Montana’s outstanding athlete in 1975 and was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
