Janine Pease is probably the second, and perhaps the third, American Indian appointed to the Montana Board of Regents.
Gov. Brian Schweitzer, who appointed Pease to the board on Monday, said he believed Pease was probably the first Indian on the board. His staff later said there were probably one or two others before Pease.
Colleen Conroy, a member of the Crow tribe, was appointed by Gov. Marc Racicot to the Board of Regents in 1993. When she resigned from the board due to illness, she was recognized by the regents for her contributions to the Montana University System.
