HELENA — Gov. Brian Schweitzer and his wife, Nancy, paid $24,774 in federal and state income taxes last year on an adjusted gross income of $168,061.
Their federal income taxes totaled $17,226, and state taxes were $7,548. The Schweitzers also paid $12,626 in property taxes last year, according to tax records released by the governor's office.
The couple has paid more than $408,000 in federal and state income taxes since 2005, his first year in office, his office said.
Schweitzer has made available his tax returns to reporters ever since his first year in office, as he pledged to do during his 2004 campaign.
For income in 2010, the Schweitzers reported his $91,258 salary as governor, plus $69,823 in capital gains, $5,201 in taxable interest and $1,779 in dividends.
The Schweitzers own a 4,000-square-foot home on property adjoining Georgetown Lake and several ranches.
In 2010, they listed itemized deductions of $19,679, including charitable donations of $2,846. The couple also reported farm losses of $19,367.
The Schweitzers fared much better financially in the 2010 tax year than they did the previous year.
In 2009, the Schweitzers paid no federal income taxes and $1,252 in state income taxes on an adjusted gross income of $72,523. Their income and taxes dropped considerably from the previous year.
Schweitzer said last year that 2009 was a bad one for small businesses.
