MISSOULA - A 43-year-old transient woman who stole a Missoula meter-reader scooter and took it on a brief joyride before crashing it into a parked car has had another run-in with authorities.
Carey Sterling crashed the scooter in May and was released on probation Nov. 9. But she found herself in trouble again this week.
Authorities say she went into the Missoula Police Department on Wednesday and told an officer she wanted to confess to a crime. Court records say didn't have any details about the crime, and it appeared she was just trying to go to jail.
The officer says after he told her her claims would have to be investigated, she said, "I guess I will have to assault you then," kicked him in the shin and punched him in the face. Court records say Sterling then set a fire in a trash can at the police department.
She faces a felony charge of assault on a police officer and a misdemeanor arson charge. She has been released on her own recognizance.
