STEVENSVILLE - A Stevensville man is planting a new cash crop, and he's about to watch it get rolled up and hauled to Washington.
Nate Lengacher grows sedum and other region-specific succulents to be planted on green roofs. The plants are grown on a special mat that rolls up like sod so they can be transported easily; much of his current crop will become the roof of the Nintendo Co. building in Redmond, Wash.
Lengacher said the living roofs are sustainable, reduce heat, help manage stormwater and outlast traditional roofing materials. He became interested in growing roofs after seeing Pat Supplee's Missoula home on a green home tour. Supplee had her green roof installed in 2007.
