An elderly woman from Washington was cited twice for reckless driving after causing two accidents while driving the wrong way on Interstate 90 near Cardwell Thursday morning.
Montana Highway Patrol trooper Mark Knutson said the 71-year-old woman was driving west in the wrong lane about 6:15 a.m. and caused one car to rollover as the driver dodged her and then she hit a pickup truck head on.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. Knutson said all three drivers had their seatbelts on and the airbags functioned properly.
Prior to the accident, the elderly woman stopped at a convenience store in Three Forks to ask for directions. She became confused as she returned to the interstate and got on the interstate via the exit ramp and started driving her Toyota Echo the wrong way, according to the report.
A driver in a Pontiac Grand AM swerved to avoid hitting her, drove into the median and the vehicle rolled. The driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck then struck the woman’s car. The accident occurred about 8 miles east of Whitehall.
The elderly woman was taken to St. James HealthCare for observation and was released.
