A man died Thursday morning after an explosion near a home in Wolf Point.
The Roosevelt County Sheriff's Office said Mike Long, 45, of Wolf Point was taken by ambulance to Trinity Hospital in Wolf Point, where he died from injuries received in the explosion.
At about 9:45 a.m., Long, who was part of a private contracting crew, was working on a sewer line on a street near a tribal housing unit on West Dayton Street and Eighth Avenue North. The explosion happened in the street in front of the building, Sheriff Freedom Crawford said.
Crawford said the cause of the explosion has not been determined and is under investigation.
The Montana Highway Patrol diagramed the scene and an Occupational Health and Safety Administration team from Billings will arrive Friday to assist in the investigation, he said.
"As of right now, it's a coroner's case and I'm the coroner," Crawford said. "We're trying to answer all the questions that came up."
Several of Long's co-workers were in a nearby pickup truck when the explosion happened, Crawford said, but no injuries were reported.
The sheriff's office, Fort Peck Tribal Police, Wolf Point Ambulance and Wolf Point Fire Department responded.
