A Ryegate woman was killed Monday after the kitchen in her mobile home caught fire.
At about 4:50 a.m., the Ryegate Volunteer Fire Department was called to a fire at an older mobile home about two miles from town on U.S. Highway 12.
According to Floyd Fisher, Golden Valley County sheriff and fire chief, Judith Anne Voss, 58, left breakfast frying on the stove and went to the opposite end of the mobile home. Her husband was outside preparing for a hunting trip when he looked up and saw flames in the kitchen.
The fast-spreading fire trapped the woman at the back of the trailer.
"She wasn't able to make it out, and (her husband) tried getting back into the house and opened the door. There was just too much smoke," Fisher said.
The fire destroyed the home and an adjacent garage.
"It was a total loss," Fisher said.
