Yellowowl told police she stabbed her mother because she didn't do enough to protect her from an assault the night before. Lake County prosecutors say the assault didn't occur and that Yellowowl had not been taking medication needed to treat mental illness.
Yellowowl was sentenced to the state hospital after stabbing two other people with a kitchen knife in 2004. She was released in 2008.
