A pump failure caused about 2,000 barrels, or 84,000 gallons, of brine to spill Sunday at a saltwater disposal well in Bottineau County, according to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division.
Scout Energy Management reported Monday that the spill, located about 5 miles northwest of Maxbass, was contained within the diking at the location. The brine, a waste byproduct of oil production, has been recovered, the company reported.
The spill occurred after a pump failure, said Oil and Gas Division spokeswoman Katie Haarsager, adding that an alarm system did not operate.
A state inspector has been to the location and will monitor additional cleanup.
