Riverton police shot and killed a man Thursday morning after authorities say he fired at officers.

The county coroner said Thursday afternoon he will hold an inquest in order to determine whether to recommend a prosecutor charge the officers involved.

According to a Facebook post from the Riverton Police Department, at about 11 a.m. Thursday, Riverton police encountered a man near the intersection of Monroe and First streets who was illegally in possession of at least one gun. The man, a convicted felon, threatened police, according to the post.

After the man shot at police, they returned fire, injuring him. The unnamed man was taken to Sage West Hospital, according to the statement, signed by Chief Eric Murphy. The man later died.

No police officers were injured.

In a statement, Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen said he will convene an inquest into the man’s death. The inquest, which will be held with a jury of three people, will decide whether to recommend criminal charges related to the man’s death.

Inquests are typically held when any law enforcement officer in the county is suspected of causing a death, according to the statement.

Stratmoen stated that he expects the inquest will not be held for more than a month.

The coroner’s statement says multiple agencies are investigating the shooting, although it does not specify which agencies. Although the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation typically investigates police shootings, calls to a member of DCI command staff and a spokesman were not immediately returned.

When reached by phone Thursday afternoon, Stratmoen said he could not comment further until the inquest is complete.

Murphy could not immediately be reached Thursday afternoon to comment for this story.
