CODY, Wyo. — A local bar owner was arrested last weekend on aggravated assault charges after he drove his car into a man he was arguing with at the Ponderosa Campground in Cody, police said.
John McCormack, 38, owner of the Gardens and the adjacent Silver Dollar Bar downtown, drove his black BMW into Thomas Kachian, 40, of Racine, Wis., around 2:30 a.m. July 7, police said. McCormack then drove away.
Kachian was taken to West Park Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Police arrested McCormack later that morning at the Gardens in downtown Cody. Aggravated assault is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Police Chief Dan Kelsey said Friday that McCormack apparently was in an argument involving Kachian and a woman. McCormack was visiting Kachian, who was staying at the campground, he said.
He backed his vehicle up, spun the tires and drove directly towards Mr. Kachian, knocking him several feet in the air, Kelsey said, citing witnesses accounts of the incident. It apparently was an argument involving the woman or over the woman.
Police are not releasing the womans name because of a separate investigation into allegations of sexual assault. Kelsey said police do not know if the sexual assault allegations are related to the incident on Saturday.
It's really kind of muddled and so were trying to work through that, Kelsey said.
McCormack was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond and will appear for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday. The judge ordered McCormack not to drink and report to the Park County Jail daily for alcohol tests. McCormack also was ticketed for driving with a suspended Texas drivers license.
