Darcy Ronne, 10, and her sister Sandy of Cody pound nails into a bear fence that went up around the Wapiti School playground Saturday. The project - organized by local volunteers and paid for with donated material, labor and with cash from the Defenders of Wildlife - is meant to keep grizzly and black bears out of the playground. Wapiti, about 20 miles west of Cody, is prime bear habitat. Since 1990, 16 grizzly and seven black bears have been captured within four miles of Wapiti. Though there haven't been any close calls in the playground, organizers say the fence will be extra protection as the bear population grows.
