CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The city of Cheyenne will lease a girls softball complex for $1 a year despite how maintaining the facility could cost the city $20,000 a year.

Meanwhile, the city is facing a $2.5 million budget shortfall.

The council on Monday approved a 25-year lease with VFW Post 1881 to maintain the complex. Councilman Jim Brown says the longtime dollar-lease system needs to be reined in but now is not the right time.

Parks and Recreation Director Rick Parish says the timing of the lease is "not great" but Cheyenne has a shortage of athletic fields. About 600 girls in Cheyenne play softball.
