Cheyenne council votes for cell phone ban

CHEYENNE - The Cheyenne City Council is one vote away from banning texting and hand-held cell phone calls while driving. The city council voted 8-1 on Monday in favor of the ban; the council has a final vote scheduled for Sept. 14 before the ban can go into effect.

Councilman Jimmy Valdez was the only member to vote against the ban. He said police already aren't enforcing a ban on dogs riding in truck beds, and he doubts they would be able to enforce the cell phone ban.

The National Traffic Safety Administration said driving while using a cell phone increases the risk of crashing by six times.
