CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne won't be buying a statue for the entrance to a new park after all.
City councilors on Monday deadlocked on spending $20,000 on the bronze rabbit statue. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported the proposal was defeated in a 5-5 vote.
The city had already set aside money to pay for the statue. But last week some council members said the city shouldn't move ahead with the plan at a time when city employees were laid off because of budget cuts.
At Monday's meeting, opponents said spending money on a statue would send a bad message to city workers and the public.
Councilman Jim Brown said the money intended for the statue can be used to further balance the budget if that becomes necessary.
