LARAMIE - The Laramie City Council has withdrawn a proposal that would have created an ordinance prohibiting the use of hand-held cell phones and other communication devices while driving.
The issue could come before the council again, but some members raised concerns about the proposal at a Wednesday meeting.
The city already has an ordinance banning careless driving. The council had advised the city attorney to add a stipulation to include driving while using a cell phone.
City council members raised concerns that such a rule could hurt businesses that rely on communication between vehicles, such as tow trucks. They also questioned whether it would address other careless driving problems, such as applying makeup while driving.
Laramie police say enforcing the ordinance would be difficult.
