CHEYENNE - The Wyoming House of Representatives has given preliminary approval to a bill that would make forgery of a drug prescription a felony.
House Speaker Colin Simpson is sponsoring the bill. The Cody Republican said passing it would allow law enforcement agencies to charge people who forge prescriptions to get drugs at an appropriate level.
Simpson said he's heard from law enforcement that 10 people died from abuse of prescription drugs in three months last year.
Rep. Timothy Hallinan, a Republican from Gillette who's also a medical doctor, said most of the people forging prescriptions are addicts. He questioned whether it makes more sense to send them to prison or to a treatment program.
