CASPER - A pair of Wyoming Supreme Court decisions affirm the state's stance on the point at which to calculate coalbed methane's value for tax purposes.

In separate cases, Kennedy Oil and Williams Production RMT appealed Wyoming's valuation of produced coalbed methane, a type of natural gas.

The companies argued that valuation should occur at a point that would allow the cost of "gathering" the gas to be deducted from its taxable value. The Supreme Court agreed with the Wyoming Department of Revenue that the point of valuation lies farther "downstream," where value of the gas generally is higher.
