United Blood Services has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors. Type O negative is the most crucial, but all blood types are being asked for at this time.
Over the past few weeks, demand has outpaced the supply for almost all blood types. O negative is critical because only 6 percent of the population is O negative, and it can be given to anyone in an emergency situation.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years of age, weigh at least 100 pounds and be in good health. Additional height-weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. To make an appointment to donate, call United Blood Services at 248-9168.
As of Monday, United Blood Services had hospital orders for more than 100 units of O negative blood waiting to be filled.
