Man dies in crash near Evanston

EVANSTON - A Utah man is dead after driving his car the wrong way on I-80 and colliding head-on with a semitrailer near Evanston early Christmas morning.

Richard L. Ray, 44 of Holladay, Utah, died at the scene at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday when his 1991 Buick collided with a 1989 Kenworth semitrailer.

Just before the crash, a witness had called the Wyoming Highway Patrol to report that Ray's car was traveling eastbound on the westbound lanes of the interstate. Investigators are looking into whether Ray had been drinking before the crash.

Trucker Michael J. Elson, 48 of Fort Wayne, Ind., was treated at Evanston Hospital and released.

Westbound I-80 was closed for almost two hours after the crash. Crews had to clean up about 100 gallons of diesel fuel that leaked from the semitrailer and clear debris from the highway.
