Sheriff's vehicle hit by train
Sweetwater County Sheriff's Cpl. Tony Neimiec's 2009 Chevrolet Suburban was totaled after being struck then dragged by a train Sunday night.

CASPER, Wyo. — A freight train slammed into a Sweetwater County Sheriff's patrol SUV Sunday night east of Rock Springs, just moments after the officer escaped from the vehicle.

Neither Cpl. Tony Neimiec, the SUV's lone occupant, nor the train's crew were injured, according to a Sweetwater County Sheriff's office media release.

But Neimiec's 2009 Chevrolet Suburban was dragged about 200 yards by the train following the impact and was totaled, according to the release.

Neimiec was responding to a distress call placed about 7:30 p.m. from another driver whose vehicle had become stuck near the railroad tracks.

Traveling west along the north side of the tracks about three miles east of Rock Springs, Neimiec himself got stuck in the mud and snow. He jumped from the vehicle just before a westbound train struck the SUV, said Sweetwater County Sheriff's office spokesman Dick Blust.

Ironically, the train didn't hit the vehicle of the driver who made the distress call, Blust said.
