12:20 p.m.: With a new meter installed, power to the switching center near Big Timber has been restored, said Verizon spokesman Robert Kelley.
"All our sites are back in service," Kelley said.
11:30 a.m.: Verizon spokesman Robert Kelley said at 11:30 a.m. Thursday that multiple cell sites are still down due to loss of power at a switching center in Big Timber.
He said rodents caused a fire in power meter cabinet. The office has no backup generator and batteries did not have enough power. He expected the meter to be replaced within an hour.
INITIAL REPORT: Verizon phone service has been disrupted across northwest Wyoming due to a fiber optics cable being cut near Big Timber, Mont.
Verizon spokesman Robert Kelley said technicians have been dispatched to repair the fiber.
A dispatcher at the Park County, Wyo., Dispatch Center said Verizon service across the Bighorn Basin is out and law enforcement agencies are communicating by radio.
In Montana, the outage has delayed some NorthWestern Energy customers in contacting customer service representatives.
“Cold and wet, and in some cases snowy weather, has led to heavy call volumes,” a NorthWestern spokesman said.
NorthWestern customers may call 888-467-2669 to report outages, downed lines or other issues related to electric or natural-gas service.
