DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT, Wyo. (AP) — A Montana woman died after falling 350 feet from Devils Tower National Monument over the weekend, officials said Monday.
Jacqueline Weimer, 27, of Bozeman, Mont., was pronounced dead shortly after her fall Saturday from the 1,267-foot high tree stump-shaped monolith of volcanic rock in northeast Wyoming, Chief Ranger Scott Brown said.
Weimer was rappelling down the tower's southeast side with four friends, all from Bozeman, when the fall occurred, Brown said.
The National Park Service and Crook County authorities were investigating.
"We have not determined exactly what happened yet," Brown said.
About 80,000 people have climbed the tower in its 100-year history.
Weimer's death was the fifth fatality reported.
