CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Health Department warns that high blood pressure and high cholesterol are growing problems with high impacts on the health of too many residents in the state.

Statistics show that just over one in four Wyoming adults reported they have high blood pressure and nearly one in three said they have been diagnosed with high cholesterol.

The numbers are similar across the country.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol are both major risk factors in heart attacks, stroke and other cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease was the leading cause of death in Wyoming in 2009 with just over 1,000 deaths attributed due to heart disease or stroke.

Joe Grandpre, of the state Health Department, says getting your cholesterol and blood pressure checked on a regular basis is important.
