CHEYENNE — The Wyoming Department of Corrections on Tuesday announced staffing changes that will result in a national search to find a new warden for the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins.

Scott Abbott, who has served as warden at the penitentiary since August 2003, will transfer to Cheyenne. He will serve as chief of operations for the Division of Prisons.

Melinda Brazzale, spokeswoman for the Corrections Department, said Abbott requested the transfer. "He looks at this as a way to give him a larger view of the entire department," she said of Abbott.

Martha Buchanan, the current chief of operations, has been named associate warden at the new Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution, which will be built in Torrington.

Michael Murphy, associate warden at the Rawlins prison, will serve as acting warden beginning June 29.
