CASPER — Sens. John Barrasso and Mike Enzi of Wyoming have joined six other senators in criticizing the Obama administration for what they claim is a "decision to review all state-issued coal permits."
The Senators sent a letter to President Obama this week saying the decision could encroach on states' rights to manage permitting over mines.
The federal Office of Surface Mining announced last month that it will begin reviewing state-issued Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act permits.
Industry officials suspect the move was spurred by controversy over mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia.
Barrasso's office says the review could still apply to other states if they have surface mining in areas with streams.
