GUATEMALA CITY A television reporter was shot dead on Thursday as a rally in favor of former dictator Efrain Rios Montt turned violent in Guatemala's capital.
Hector Ramirez of Channel 7 was shot while fleeing from a mob that was chasing reporters who were covering the demonstration.
The rally began at dawn when hundreds of youths wearing ski masks and carrying clubs began gathering at a plaza in the business center of the capital.
The demonstrators had been called to protest a Supreme Court injunction that temporarily blocked Efrain Rios Montt from registering for the Nov. 9 presidential election.
The injunction came after another top tribunal, the Constitutional Court, ruled that he could run.
His attempts to register in earlier elections had been barred on grounds that Guatemala's constitution bars former coup leaders from the presidency. Supporters argue that law is invalid because it is retroactive.
Rios Montt, now 77, took power in a coup in 1982 and was himself overthrown 18 months later
