A state senator or representative recently stated that "carbon dioxide has been given a bad rap." I couldn't agree more, but the totally unfounded claims of global warming have also destroyed a lot of valuable industry, jobs and very important tax base.

Carbon dioxide simply cannot be the cause of any global warming. To understand why one need only compare the heat absorbing effects of both carbon dioxide and rocks. To explain this I will compare carbon dioxide with quartz, the most common rock-forming mineral.

The ability of any element to absorb solar energy and increase in temperature depends on the element’s specific heat. Here both carbon dioxide and quartz appear to have the same specific heat, about 0.18 (usually the calories required to raise one gram of material one degree centigrade). However, for quartz specific heat refers to the normal one gram of material while for carbon dioxide it is per liter of gas. One liter of gas weighs about one gram, but then for a given volume of material quartz weighs 1,000 times more than carbon dioxide, which means that the quartz has 1,000 times as much capacity to store solar energy than carbon dioxide has.

So, what are we going, to do with all of the hot rocks, blast them into space?

The weather has been changing since time began but it hasn't yet been caused by man. The changing weather patterns are driven solely by the sun, for the following reasons:

  • The amount of solar energy produced by the sun varies
  • The Earth's distance from the sun varies because Earth's orbit is elliptical instead of circular.
  • The hot and cold periods also vary because the Earth's orbit also rotates around the sun giving us the hot or cold periods at different times of the year.

So, shall we just turn off the sun?
