Senate Bill 331 would allow NorthWestern Energy, a monopoly, to bypass state oversight and force its customers to pay millions of dollars extra because of an investment the Colstrip Plant. This is not an attempt to “save Colstrip,” but a money grab for NorthWestern investors who intend to pass the financial risk along to their customers who could be forced to continue paying the costs even if Colstrip shuts down sooner than expected.
My family, like most Montanans, don’t have options when it comes to essential utilities, and if this bill passes, we will potentially be subject to a significant addition to our electric bill over the next several years. SB331 gives NorthWestern Energy far too much power over its customers who will have no choice but to pay more for services. It is the duty of our elected representatives to make decisions in the best interests for the residents of Montana, not to leave us footing the bill for NWE’s gamble. SB331 clearly benefits the stockholders of Northwestern Energy far more than it does the rest of us. Please urge your representatives to vote no on SB331.
