Some 20 years ago, Bill Clinton found himself in a really tight spot when he was trying to explain away Monica Lewinsky and said “there is nothing going on between us.” When he was questioned about the truthfulness of that statement he went on to very infamously say, “It depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.” Well, I think we have come full circle and find ourselves there again.
“There is no collusion” has become part of Donald’s daily tweet storm. On Feb. 16, 2017, Trump said, “I have nothing to do with Russia. To the best of my knowledge no person I deal with does.”
On March 2, 2017, Jeff Sessions recuses himself from the Russian investigation because he met with Russians.
On July 8, 2017, the New York Times reported on the June 9, 2016, Don Jr. meeting with Russians. Don Jr. quickly released a response saying that the meeting was about adopting Russian kids.
On July 11, we actually get to see the e-mails about collecting Hillary dirt. When questioned about who actually drafted the Don Jr. statement, attorney Jay Sekulow said Trump wasn’t involved. Then, on January 29, 2018, Sekulow notified Robert Mueller that Trump actually drafted that “short and accurate response.”
On Aug. 5, 2018, Trump tweets the truth, “This meeting was to get information on an opponent, totally legal.”
I think the linguist and baseball coach Yogi Berra’s quote captures this moment — he famously said, “This is like déjà vu all over again.”
