I called Rep. Rodney Garcia to voice my displeasure at his comments he made regarding Child and Family Services Division. I told him that as a constituent, two things greatly alarmed me: 1) That he was advocating assault against workers whose job is to look out for the well-being of children and 2) That he gave these comments to a blog that traffics in conspiracy theories, UFO sightings and other fringe ideas.
Rep. Garcia explained to me that "hundreds of people" have told him that child welfare workers are nothing more than jackbooted thugs that'll burst down your door and steal your kids with no remorse. When I said that number seemed anecdotal at best and disingenuous at worst, he hung up on me before I could finish my sentence.
I don't know what's more upsetting, that an elected lawmaker would happily consort with an extremist blog or that he feels he isn't beholden to the criticism of those he represents. Rep. Garcia would do well to remember that he barely won his primary election and squeaked by in the general. There's now at least one more household that will be making efforts to ensure he isn't re-elected in 2021.
