A.J. Otjen’s op-eds are always super, but “Government shouldn’t control women’s bodies” (The Billings Gazette, May 22, 2019), was spectacular. I request a dose of Otjen on a more regular basis. Please.
I am a liberal feminist living in our big red bubble, and Otjen keeps my hope-spark flickering. I am a Billings native and the oldest child of a Republican business owner now deceased.
Last week, I watched a town hall from Philly and a white male teamster member who voted for Trump in 2016 and promises to again in 2020 say something like this: “Business is good because of Trump and Trump is pro-life. I also think that Trump is doing a great job of making government simpler and less invasive.” He said this without irony.
This guy’s comfortable wage, retirement and health benefits are because of the Democratic Party — ditto firemen, policemen, etc.
Otjen is correct. This issue of a woman’s right to her body and her privacy is divisive to the nth power. Does anyone think that abortion will go away because of these invasive laws? Only the wealthy will get safe abortions, and the rest of women will be back in the dark.
Bill Clinton put it this way, “Abortion should be safe, legal and rare.” And it is all three because of Roe vs. Wade.
