Donald Trump’s recent, unwarranted criticism of Sen. Jon Tester regarding Trump’s pick of Rear Adm. Ronny Jackson to head the Veterans Administration has provoked a fair amount of local discussion, both in praise of and criticism of Tester.

Tester, as the top Democrat on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, was simply doing his job by mentioning allegations about Jackson – allegations that were supplied to him by Jackson’s associates. Tester had every right and, indeed, the responsibility to do so. In Trump’s world that was a no-no! How dare Tester go against Trump for his pick for a cabinet position, despite the fact that Jackson was simply unqualified and woefully inexperienced to head a large agency such as the Veterans Administration? Truth be told, Trump may have even promised Jackson the VA administrator’s position in return for giving a glowing report to the press on Trump’s medical condition. Those of us who watched that news coverage know full well that Jackson’s bogus report was nothing more than Trump’s words stated in Jackson’s voice.

Tester, a Democrat, is up for re-election in November. Several wannabe politicians running as Republicans have taken advantage of Trump’s infantile rants in an effort to claim Tester’s seat in the Senate. We can expect that the rhetoric contained in their political ads will be as stupid and inaccurate as any of Trump’s asinine comments. No Montanan should be foolish enough to believe them.
