I am writing to hopefully educate others with scientific facts about wolves as there is an unfair hatred towards them in this state. Wolves are only responsible for 0.2 percent of livestock loss. You have a greater chance of being killed by a cow than a wolf. Wolves are a keystone species and if they have a stable place in an ecosystem their presence benefits many others. Wolves are a self-regulating species and do not over-breed.
Their presence brings in millions in tourist dollars from people hoping to see them. They are highly social and intelligent creatures and like other animals they grieve the death of a pack mate.
I urge the public to be truly educated about wolves because many destructive laws are in place that have potential to wipe them out. There can be a middle ground so that wolves and ranchers can co-exist, but we have to be willing to work together. Other states have implemented successful wolf deterrents in their ranching, and I urge Montanans to do the same.
