In March 2012, Goodell suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for one season, general manager Mickey Loomis for eight games and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games because players were paid bonuses for injuring opposing team players. Gregg Williams, the defensive coordinator for New Orleans during the cash-for-injuries program and had subsequently joined the Rams, was suspended indefinitely. Players Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove also received suspensions two months later. Vilma got a full-season ban and the others received shorter sentences.
