The Billings Royals erupted for 10 runs in the third inning en route to a 17-1 victory over Gillette (Wyo.) at the Goldsmith Gallery Jewelers/Make-A-Wish Foundation American Legion baseball tournament at Dehler Park Friday.
Drew Atkeison pitched the full five innings to earn the win for Billings, 17-9 overall and 4-3 in the league. The game was called due to the eight-run rule.
Baylee Slevira, Konner Wiechman and Austin Vogel each drove in three runs for the Royals. Tanner Leenknecht blasted a solo home run for the winners. Slevira and Wiechman each slapped doubles.
Billings leadoff batter Joe Zimmer batted 2 of 3 with two runs and two RBIs.
In thee first game of the tourney at Dehler, Idaho Falls collected 15 hits on its way to a 13-6 win over the Royals. Six of those hits were doubles. Jaxon Bird led the way with two doubles and went 3 of 4 overall with five RBIs and one run.
Wiechman provided most of Billings' offense with three RBIs and a double.
The two-time defending State AA champion Royals will tangle with their rival, the Billings Scarlets, at 8 p.m. Saturday at Dehler. It is a conference game and scheduled for nine innings.
Tourney action will continue on Saturday, with the first game at Dehler at 11 a.m. with Jackson (Wyo.) playing Spokane (Wash.). The first game at Pirtz Field Saturday is set for 11 a.m. and pits Pocatello (Idaho) against Laurel.
