RED LODGE — The Beartooth Run has added a new twist for its 38th annual event this weekend.
The annual run, which consists of a 4.2-mile course and an 8.2-mile course, will be held Saturday beginning at Parkside Campground in Red Lodge.
New this year is a 22-mile, 5,000-foot vertical climb bike ride on Sunday. The time-trial style hillclimb will start in downtown Red Lodge and head up the Beartooth Highway, with racers taking off at 20-second intervals.
"Due to the extent of the climb, this will be one of the most challenge bicycle road races in this region," said event organizer Hope Smith. "We wanted to come up with another event that would utilize the amazingly scenic Beartooth Highway.
"We're hoping that there will be athletes out there who are willing to take on the challenge of doing both the run and the bike climb."
The online registration deadline for both events is today.
