A very busy weekend of motorsports action in the Billings area gets underway today with events at the MetraPark grandstand, Yellowstone Drag Strip, BMP Speedway and Columbus.
MetraPark will host the Redneck Rendezvous, which will include mud bog drag races, ATV/quad races and a "Big Car" demolition derby tonight beginning at 7:30 p.m. in front of the outdoor grandstand. The mud bog drags will feature three classes of vehicles racing on 150-foot lanes in a single-elimination bracket. The ATV/quads will race on a speed motocross course that is half flat-track and half motocross. The "Big Car" demolition derby will feature 8-cylinder cars such as Lincolns and Cadillacs.
"The show will go on rain or shine, and it's going to be a good one," said event promoter Dave Jackson. "The mud bog drags have never been done in front of the grandstand here, so we're excited about that."
Yellowstone Drag Strip in Acton will host a $15,000 Shootout on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m., with cars from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington and Canada registered to compete. All ET bracket classes will be in action, and the Shootout will be split into Electronic and Non-Electronic divisions.
"This is a big deal for our local guys to race for this kind of purse," said JaLene Gathman of YDS. "We're hoping for 200 cars on Sunday."
YDS will also host a $5,000 Quick 16 Shootout under the lights tonight starting at 7 p.m.
Tonight's races at BMP Speedway will include Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks starting at 7 p.m. It is just the second appearance of the season for the Late Model class.
The NAHA Big Sky Thunder Nationals Hillclimb gets underway today near Columbus. The top 50 riders today will qualify for Sunday's $30,000 King of the Hill Shootout. The hill is located five miles north of Columbus on Rapelje Road.
